- b. 1925, MadridWriterMainly known as a prolific short-story writer, Medardo Fraile has also written a play, El hermano (The Brother) (1948), two volumes of journalism, four books of literary criticism, and a translation of Robert Louis Stevenson's The Weir of Hermiston (1995). With Alfonso Sastre, he was one of the founders of the Arte Nuevo theatre group in the mid-1940s, and between 1957 and 1964 was deputy editor in chief and drama critic of Cuadernos de Agora. After a period in the Spanish Department at the University of Southampton, he secured a lectureship at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow), retiring with the title of emeritus professor in 1986.His first volume of short stories, Cuentos con algún amor (Stories with a Little Love), was published in 1954. Between then and 1994, he published eleven further volumes, including five of stories for children. His collected stories came out in an edition of Cuentos completos (Complete Stories) in 1991. His work attracted awards and distinctions from an early stage, including the Sésamo Prize for Short Story and the Critics" Book of the Year Award (1965), the Estafeta Literaria Prize for Short Story (1970), and the Hucha de Oro Prize for Short Story (1971).
